Round-up of games played 3, 4 & 5 May: South Yorkshire Results & Review

In the top Premier Division game of the day, Wakefield Thornes overwhelmed Sheffield Collegiate by eight wickets at Field Lane. Matt Taylor (4-20) and Charlie Bourne (4-19) bowled the visitors out for 49 to give their batsmen a simple victory target. Doncaster Town are now the only other unbeaten team in the division, after Harsha Rajapaksha (124 not out off 106 balls) led them to 291-7 after they were put in to bat at home to Hallam, who were bowled out for 167 in reply. Josh Knapton (4-34) and Mayank Mishras (4-23) helped third-placed Cleethorpes bowl Shiregreen out for 95 at Hatfield House Lane, and Harry Warwick’s unbeaten 55 led the visitors to a seven-wicket win. Matt Cartwright (63) and Andrew Pickering put on 118 for Whitley Hall’s first wicket after they were put in to bat by Wickersley Old Village at Baxter Field, before Neil Longhurst weighed in with an unbeaten 53 in the hosts’ 232-5. In reply, Dylan Smythe (60 not out) and skipper Iftikhar Afzal (49 not out) put on an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 100 to rescue Wickersley from 102-6 and earn them four valuable points. Steve Walters’ 71 was the backbone of Barnsley Woolley Miners’ 228-8 after they were put in to bat by Cawthorne at Dark Lane, but Harry Allinson (74) and skipper Archie Greaves (63 off 29 balls) steered the hosts to a three-wicket win that moves them into the top half of the table. The division’s leading wicket-taker, Adam Copley, took 5-24 as Tickhill bowled Appleby Frodingham out for 143 at Brumby Hall, then opener Jim Morgan’s 69 set his side up for a six-wicket win in 30 overs.

In the game of the day in the Championship Division, a brilliant 122 off 153 balls by skipper Danny Kemp led Whiston Parish Church to 199-7 at home to Sprotbrough; Arman Jaffer then taking 4-45 as the visitors were restricted to 187-8 in reply. Sheffield Collegiate 2nds’ skipper Adam Burkinshaw (53) led a recovery from 18-5 to help his side reach 166 all out away to Ackworth, for whom Dale Longfield took 4-29. Tate Miller then took 4-19 as the hosts were dismissed for 129 in reply. Rory Daburger took 5-26 to help Doncaster Town 2nds bowl Wath out for 102 after asking them to bat first at Town Fields, and he was then unbeaten on 40 when the hosts completed a six-wicket win in the 29th over. Doncaster, Collegiate and Whiston are now the only three unbeaten sides in the division. Elsecar got off the mark in emphatic style after Tanzeel Ali top-scored with 57 in their 199 all out against Aston Hall at Green Lane, and Arsalan Mir then took 5-20 as the hosts were bowled out for 63 in reply. Ibrahim Safi (60) and James Waller (65) put on 107 for the fourth wicket to help Tickhill 2nds to 216-6 against Rockingham Colliery at Hoyland Common, and Mohammad Khan then took 6-34 to help bowl the hosts out for 142. Ikramullah Naseri took 7-17 in 11.4 overs to help Oughtibridge War Memorial bowl Treeton out for 108 at Washfield Lane, skipper Harvey Wootton providing the only real resistance for the hosts with 52; and the visitors then completed an eight-wicket win in 16 overs. 

In the Championship Division, Arman Jaffer (113 off 89 balls) and Brady Saunders (73) led joint-leaders Whiston Parish Church to 292-8 against Wath at Moor Road, and the hosts were all out for 170 in reply. Sheffield Collegiate 2nds kept pace at the top with a six-wicket win over Rockingham Colliery at Abbeydale. George Bartlett took 5-48 as the visitors were restricted to 159-8, opener Harry Grindle top-scoring with 50; then Jack Clough hit 71 as Collegiate cruised home in 29 overs. Parteek Khasa took 5-30 to help Sprotbrough reduce Aston Hall to 61-7 at Melton Road, but Adam Clarke (64 not out) helped the visitors recover to 175-9. The hosts then put last week’s defeat behind them, winning by four wickets with seven overs to spare. Alex Rowland took 4-10 to help Tickhill 2nds bowl Treeton out for 177 after they were put in to bat at Alderson Drive. Ibrahim Safi (53) and James Waller (47) then added 109 for the hosts’ fourth wicket as they cruised to a five-wicket win in the 42nd over. Joshua Hen-Boisen took 5-40 to help Ackworth bowl Elsecar out for 176 at the Al-Murad Stadium, and the visitors recovered from 41-3 to record a five-wicket win in the 44th over. At Waterside Gardens, Ikramullah Naseri (101) led Oughtibridge War Memorial to 279-8 after they were asked to bat first by previously unbeaten Doncaster Town 2nds, for whom Jak Hotchkiss took 4-21 in three overs at the end of the innings; and the visitors were then bowled out for 95 in reply. 

In Division 1, opener Chris Siddall (162 off 154 balls) helped Whitley Hall 2nds to 302-8 after they were put in to bat by Wickersley Old Village 2nds at Northfield Lane. Fellow opener James Butler then made 94 for the hosts, but there were four wickets for Jordan Bethel as the visitors bowled Wickersley out for 298 to complete a thrilling four-run win and maintain their 100% record at the top of the table. Coal Aston are joint top after overwhelming previously unbeaten Darfield by 187 runs at School Lane. Dave Rodgers (53) and Ben Hall (69) helped the visitors to 269-7; then Michael Hunter (4-30) and Lawrence Browes (4-35) bowled the hosts out for 82 in reply. Skipper Tommy Hyde (61) and keeper Aadam Hassan (59) led the way in third-placed Upper Haugh’s impressive 294-9 against Houghton Main at Middlecliffe Lane. Parvez Asghar took 5-37 when the hosts replied, and, despite 54 from Renaldo Brathwaite, they were all out for 127. Limar Pierce took 4-19 for Warmsworth when they bowled Penistone out for 152 at Queen Street, then Liam Cotton’s 61 helped the visitors home by four wickets with nearly ten overs left. There was a close finish at Park Road, where Conisbrough made 234 all out after being put in to bat by Monk Bretton, Dawud Hafejee top-scoring with 54, whilst Craig Heppenstall took 4-51 for the visitors. After four early wickets from Zeeshan Karamat, Monk Bretton were 53-7 in reply, but Steven Honeyman (62) and Jenson Hayes (85 not out) added 149 for the eighth wicket in reply, and the visitors were just six runs short of their target when they were bowled out with 19 balls remaining. 

There are three joint-leaders at the top of Division 2. Newcomers Frickley Colliery had a seven-wicket win over Elsecar 2nds after a remarkable performance by the League’s leading wicket-taker, Kieran McIntyre, who took 9-39 in 13.5 overs as the visitors were bowled out for 77 after they were put in to bat at Westfield Lane. Adam Rollin (52 not our) then took the hosts to victory in the 19th over. Norton Woodseats continued their good run with a four-wicket win over Wakefield Thornes 2nds at Matthews Lane. Having bowled their visitors out for 130, it was skipper Dan Loughlin (57 not out) who guided Woodseats home in the 42nd over. Nazam Mohammed (131 off 111 balls) helped Parkhead to a formidable 343-9 against Oughtibridge War Memorial 2nds at Ecclesall Road. Mark Collinson made 54 at the top of the order for the visitors, but Harry Pollard took 4-60 for the hosts, as they claimed an 89-run win to maintain their place amongst the three leaders. Jack Unwin’s 87 helped previously-unbeaten Hallam 2nds to 186-7 against Cawthorne 2nds at Crimicar, but the visitors bounced back from last week’s defeat to Parkhead with a solid batting effort to overhaul their target with four wickets and two overs to spare. Opener Kieren O’Sullivan (65) and Tom Roper (54 not out) were the principal contributors to Millhouses Works’ 225-7 against Sheffield United at Bawtry Road. United’s reply folded after skipper Faiz Hussain and Zabe Javed (86 not out) had added 90 for their third wicket, and the visitors won by 48 runs. Aston Hall 2nds came out on top in a high scoring battle at Green Lane between two sides seeking their first win. Stephen Hague (102 not out) and Rasheed Eddy (76 off 55 balls) added 130 for Thorpe Hesley & High Green’s fourth wicket in their 271 all out, Daniel Bothma taking 4-50 for the hosts; then skipper Mark Barnard (128 off 101 balls) led the home side to a five wicket win with six overs to spare. 

There are also three joint leaders in Division 3. Relegated Hatfield Town have made an excellent start in their bid to bounce straight back into Division 2, but they were indebted to number eight Sharafat Hussain (53) for rescuing them from 75-8 to reach 165 all out against Wath 2nds at Carr Side Lane; Aiden Coulbeck then taking 4-14 as the visitors were bowled out for 88 in reply. Opener Daniel Longley (82) spearheaded Sheffield Collegiate 3rds’ 236-6 at home to Worsbrough Bridge, and they then restricted their visitors to 194-5 in reply. Rockingham Colliery 2nds gained another hard-fought win, this time at home to Higham. Opener Jack Riley top-scored in the hosts 179-8; then Kelham Bennett (4-38) was amongst the wickets again as Higham were restricted to 174-9, after Alex Morris (68) and George Deegan (50) had added 93 for their fourth wicket. Frecheville Community are just six points behind the leaders after a comfortable win over Sheffield Caribbean at the Common. Waqas Mahroof took 4-37 as the visitors were bowled out for 147 after being put in to bat; but a fine all-round bowling effort from the visitors saw Caribbean dismissed for 74 in reply. Norton Oakes overcame a poor start to reach 185-9 against Shiregreen 2nds at Oakes Park, Muhammad Naseem taking 4-61 for the visitors. Joshua Cross then took 5-24 as Shiregreen were bowled out 12 runs short at 173. An unbeaten 120 by opener Stephen Abbs took Bradfield Village Fellowship to 224-3 after they had been put in to bat by Treeton 2nds at Washfield Lane; then Steve Foster (88) and Robbie Broomhead (62 not out) led the way as the hosts completed a seven-wicket win with three balls to spare. 

Callum Marsh’s 105 was the foundation for Division 4 leaders Sprotbrough 2nds’ 315-8 against Upper Haugh 2nds; Tim Braithwaite then took 4-28 as the hosts were bowled out for 145 and Sprotbrough are now eight points clear of the rest. Wombwell Main lost ground at the top when, having bowled Sheffield University Staff out for 144, they were bowled out for 111 in reply, Heston Christian taking 4-19. Stocksbridge recovered from 60-7 to reach 133 after they had been put in to bat by Thorncliffe & Wentworth at Lound Side, James Brown taking 5-16 for the hosts, who were themselves then bowled out two runs short at 131 in reply. Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds restricted Sheffield Collegiate 4ths to 171-7 after putting them in to bat at Woolley, then beat them by three wickets with five overs to spare. Shaun Fell’s unbeaten 126 took Barnby Dun to 210-3 against Doncaster Town 3rds at Blaxton, and they restricted their hosts to 159-7 in reply. Robert Mynett took 4-38 to help Kexborough bowl Coal Aston 2nds out for 130 at Stonelow, and Richard Burgess was unbeaten on 61 when the visitors recorded a five-wicket win. On Monday, Jason Clarke took 4-36 to help Thorncliffe & Wentworth bowl Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds out for 86 after putting them in to bat at Woolley, and beat them by six wickets. 

Umair Alam (4-29) and Kevin Pearson (58 not out) led Warmsworth 2nds to a nine-wicket win over Conisbrough 2nds, and they are now the only unbeaten side at the top of Division 5. Previously unbeaten Ackworth 2nds lost by five runs at home to Hallam 3rds after 50s from Terence Balmer and Jai Makkar took the visitors to 212-7; then they restricted their hosts to 207-7, despite 69 from Dave Harris. Maltby Miners Welfare reached 193-7 against Whiston Parish Church 2nds at Church Fields, despite George Jenkinson’s 4-29, and then Peter Brewster took 6-31 to lead his side to a 101-run win. Fifties from Jacob Meehan and Charlie Metcalfe took Fishlake to 219-8 at home to Penistone 2nds and Keith Bee (5-43) then bowled his side to a 69-run win. Corey Manderson hit 84 off 46 balls at number nine to help Whiston Forge to 233 all out at home to Silkstone United, but Daniel Walker (65) and Joseph Mosley (70 not out) then gave the visitors a platform for their six-wicket win with a third-wicket stand of 85. 

Waverley kept up the pace at the top of Division 6 with a 67-run win over Wickersley Old Village 3rds; Pratheesh Purushotaman (66) top-scored in their 214-7 after being put in to bat at Brookhouse; and the hosts were restricted tom 147-9 in reply. Thorpe Hesley & High Green 2nds are level at the top after a 25-run win over Wadworth at Smithywood Road. Daniel Powell recorded 6-2-9-5 as the hosts were bowled out for 112, but Rob Horne’s 4-27 helped ensure that visitors were all out 25 runs short at 87. Green Moor’s Satvir Singh is now the League’s top run-scorer after his unbeaten 144 off 97 balls helped them to 267-7 in their emphatic win over Whitley Hall 3rds, who were all out for 154 in reply, with Curtis Coles taking 4-34. Andy Belfield took 4-18 to help Millhouses Works 2nds restrict Sheffield Caribbean 2nds to 140-8 and set up a seven-wicket win; Michael Dearden hit 106 in a losing cause for Scholes & Harley at home to Handsworth Junior SC, who pulled off a two-wicket win off the last ball of the game; Lee Jeffries (72) and Nathan Lovell (113 not out off 83 balls) put on 120 for the second wicket to help Mexborough Athletic to 221-2 against Darfield 2nds, then Brandon Cooke (5-25) was amongst the wickets again as the visitors were bowled out 84 in reply. 

In Division 7, Upper Haugh 3rds missed the opportunity to go clear at the top when they lost at home to Barnsley Woolley Miners 4ths, Harveer Batth taking 4-15 as the hosts were bowled out for 73, to set up a five-wicket win for the Woolley side. They are joined at the top by Adwick-le-Street after James Wadsworth’s 78 not out helped them to 171-7 and then Carl Newbold took 5-23 when Sheffield United 2nds were bowled out for 108 in reply. James Hague and David Sedgwick both recorded seventies in Stocksbridge 2nds’ 188-5 against Brookhouse, who were all out for 115 in reply, Chris Lowe finishing with figures of 10-5-12-4. Amaad Mohammed took 5-32 to help Handsworth Junior SC 2nds bowl Rockingham Colliery 3rds out for 119 at Oliver’s Mount, before easing to a four-wicket win. Hennie Swart (5-42) and Pete Roberts (51) led Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds to a six-wicket win over Parkhead 2nds, for whom Harrison Vinall made 78 in vain. Three clubs have won all three games so far in Division 8; Norton Woodseats 2nds beat Wombwell Main 2nds by 42 runs; Hallam 4ths bowled Sprotbrough 3rds out for 61 and beat them by six wickets; and Monk Bretton 2nds had a two-wicket win at home to Houghton Main 2nds, thanks to James Taylor’s 88. Elsewhere, three clubs gained their first wins of the season; Eden Grove Parklands, who beat Kexborough 2nds by eight runs at Bence Lane; Norton Oakes 2nds, by 98 runs over Barnby Dun 2nds; and Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds, who beat Dearne by six wickets, 

Two clubs maintained their 100% records in Division 9, Worsbrough Bridge 2nds, who beat Mexborough Athletic 2nds by 52 runs; and Frickley Colliery 2nds, for whom Corey Hawkesworth had figures of 5-3-5-4 in their 122-run win over previously-unbeaten Elsecar 3rds at Darton. Elsewhere, Will Harling took 8-32 for Scholes & Harley 2nds in their 93-run win over Silkstone United 2nds at Barnsley Road; Denis Smith made 77 to help Oughtibridge War Memorial 3rds to their first win, over Eden Grove Parklands 2nds at Parklands; Frecheville Community 2nds gained their first win of the season, by two wickets over Fishlake 2nds; Mark Daly took 7-19 for Whiston Forge 2nds, who beat Wath 3rds by 95 runs; and Waverley 2nds beat Sheffield University Staff 2nds by four wickets. 

On Sunday, Sheffield Collegiate lost in the rearranged 2024 final of the K3 Dental Cup by 35 runs. Castleford made 288-6 after being put in to bat at Shaw Lane, former Derbyshire and Northants opener and player-of-the-match Chesney Hughes getting them off to a flyer with 113 off 89 balls, before Shaaiq Choudhry put the brakes on with an excellent spell of 3-34. Jack Timby (55) and Abdul Faseeh (67) got Collegiate off to as good start in reply with an opening stand of 94, but the task was just too great and they closed on a creditable 253-5. Elsewhere, in the first round of the 2025 K3 DentalCup, Barnsley Woolley Miners recorded a 17-run win away to Beverley Town; Shiregreen beat Hull Zingari away by four wickets after their hosts had an opening stand of 234 in their 344-5, but Haris Khan (94 off 49 balls) and Istiqlal Hanif (95 not out off 57 balls) led the visitors to a remarkable win; Bhargav Merai hit 159 from 105 balls in Doncaster Town’s 329-7 against Sessay, who were all out for 213 in reply. Elsewhere, unfortunately, it was not a good day for YCSPL clubs, with Tickhill losing by three wickets at home to Driffield; Hallam losing at Woodhouse Grange by 71 runs; Appleby Frodingham being beaten at home by Knaresborough by four wickets; Wickersley Old Village being narrowly beaten by two wickets at York; and Whitley Hall losing to Sheriff Hutton Bridge by four wickets at Baxter Field. 

Also on Sunday, there were four first round ties in the Mick Savage Memorial Trophy. Kieran McIntyre (5-24) and Adam Rollin 57 not out) continued their good form from the day before to lead Frickley Colliery to an eight-wicket win over Parkhead. Thom Macrow took 5-22 to help Cawthorne 2nds bowl Oughtibridge War Memorial 2nds out for 125 and then complete a five-wicket win. Norton Woodseats made 160-8 against Sheffield United, and then Jenson Beever took 6-21 as United were bowled out for 82 in reply. Jordan Hanson (4-21) and Garvin Serieux (66) were the main men in Thorpe Hesley & High Green’s seven-wicket win over Millhouses Works
