Callum Hawkins made 48 in Moddershall & Oulton’s North Staffs and South Cheshire League Premier A victory over Newcastle & Hartshill.

Moddershall & Oulton are the only NSSCL Premier A with an unblemished record after three weekends following their latest success at Newcastle & Hartshill.

The Modd men moved out in front on their own at the summit – and with a 10-point advantage – as they ended newly-promoted Castle’s 100 per cent record.

Newcastle & Hartshill had opened their top-flight return with eye-catching victories over defending champions Hem Heath and Porthill Park.

But their bid for an early-season hat-trick came to an end at the hands of the in-form Modd men.

It was Moddershall & Oulton who took first use on their road trip and they made a positive enough start to the encounter.

Callum Hawkins (48) and Fraser Hawkins (21) impressed early on as they guided their side to 97-1

There was a bit of a wobble as they fell to 107-5, but they rediscovered their composure as Joe Hawkins’ 43 and a 42 from Dan Richardson enabled them to post 204-9 from their 45 overs.

Joe Thorne was the pick of the Castle attack as he helped himself to 4-49, while there were a couple of wickets apiece for Dan Gibbs and Sachithra Perera.

Newcastle & Hartshill had a handful of players make starts in their run chase.

Jonathon Gidman (35), Gamindu Kanishka (30), Harry Bailey (29no) and Perera (27) all got going.

But it wasn’t enough for the home side as they were dismissed for 156 to end their winning start to the summer schedule.

Elliott Massey claimed 3-11 for the Modd men, with Richardson and Joseph Walley helping themselves to a couple of scalps apiece.

Audley saw their unbeaten run end as they lost a nail-biter at Stone SP, who in the process moved up to second in the standings.

It was a thrilling affair as Audley gave their pursuit of Stone SP’s 266-6 a cracking go to leave the outcome on a knife-edge heading into the closing stages.

Half-centuries from Jack Redman and Freddie Doorbar laid the groundwork for Audley’s reply.

Redman hit four fours in his 71, while Doorbar’s 52 featured five boundaries.

The stage was then set for captain Rob Hemmings to blast three fours and six sixes in a 52-ball 64 to keep the visitors in the hunt.

But although Ed Jones chipped in with 28 not out, Audley fell just short of the winning line as they drew stumps on 264-9.

Kasun Abeysinghe and Ed Batchelor finished with 3-56 and 3-61 respectively, where there were a couple of scalps for Jack Batchelor.

Earlier in the day, Warrick Fynn had top-scored with 77 in Stone SP’s impressive tally.

Fynn struck 15 fours in his 77, with Sam Graham (48no), Dan Lunn (35), Joey Sharp (25) and Jack Batchelor (22) providing valuable support.

Hemmings helped himself to two wickets, but then saw his side fall agonisingly short of their target.

Longton’s poor start to the season continued as they

fell to a third successive defeat.

It was Hem Heath who were the latest side to take the points against them as they recovered from back-to-back defeats.

The writing was on the wall for hosts Longton as they fell to 45-9, despite Tom Hope making 15.

Skipper Lee Ridgway (23) dragged them up to 75 all out, but that was never going to be enough to trouble their rivals.

New Zealand paceman Ray Toole orchestrated their downfall with 5-18, while there were double strikes from Ben Topley and Tom Hodson.

Hem Heath lost three wickets in knocking off the runs, but cruised to the points inside 12 overs.

Liam Banks made 29 not out and Matt Hodson chipped in with 21 to steer the visitors to a maiden success of the summer.

Porthill Park opener John Hancock was in sparkling form to set up his side’s easy win at Bagnall Norton.

Hancock smashed 13 fours and six sixes in a 95-ball 125 to pave the way for Porthill Park to amass 318-6 from their 45 overs.

He shared a first-wicket stand of 154 with Tom Steele (37) before the baton was passed to Matthew Coxon and Louis Allison to maintain the momentum.

Coxon hit seven fours and one six in his 54, while Allison’s unbeaten 52 featured the same number of boundaries.

Anuj Tiwari (3-52) led the Bagnall Norton attack, with Muhammed Mujahid taking two wickets.

Bagnall Norton struggled to keep up with the rate on the resumption, despite Josh Cartledge making 55.

Cartledge struck seven fours, with Matthew Kenvyn (38), Matthew Arnold (32no), Tiwari (25) and Justin Mould (23) also starring.

However, the home side were always up against it and could only reach 225-7 when time was called.

Jack Kesteven scooped 3-44 for Porthill Park and there were twin scalps for Coxon and Tom Kesteven.

Checkley banked their first win of the season in emphatic style as they thrashed Alsager.

Josh Hewitt (46) and Tom Carrigan (35) were in decent nick early doors, before Staffordshire duo Nils Priestley and James Kettleborough took centre stage.

Priestley’s 89 included 11 fours and two sixes, with Kettleborough striking 11 boundaries in his 78 as Checkley amassed 298-5 from their allocation. Asif Raza took two of the wickets to fall.

Alsager’s hopes of pulling off an unlikely run chase were soon ended as they tumbled to 51-5 in their response.

Yash Kothari provided some resistance with 57, which featured nine fours.

Sam Goodwin also chipped in with 22, but Alsager were eventually bowled out for 125.

Priestley rounded off a fine individual day with 3-10, while Deepak Dhapola (3-15) and Jack Farrington (3-28) also played their part in an excellent bowling effort.

Leek had a fine day on the road as they took the points on their visit to Meakins.

It needed a fourth-wicket stand of 138 between Alex Mellor and Rory Haydon to steer the Moorlanders to 208-6 at the halfway point.

Mellor top-scored with 82, hitting nine fours and four sixes in the process, while Haydon’s 52 included four fours and two maximums. Karl High claimed 4-60 for Meakins.

High (32) and Sam Moores (22) put on 51 for the first wicket as Meakins made a bright start to their reply.

But they couldn’t build on that and they were dismissed for 151, even though Jalat Khan and Simon Mugava made 25 and 17 respectively.

Ross Dearden (4-27) was the pick of the Meakins attack, backed up by two wickets each for Lewis Moulton and Josh Hudson.

Burslem won a Golden Over against Leycett in NSSCL Premier B – but it should never have been staged.

Burslem were dismissed for 175 in the first half of their trip to Park Terrace, before Leycett replied with 175-9.

The two sides then contested a Golden Over, which Burslem won, although that decision went against league rules.

They state that in the win/lose format, if the scores are level, then the side who lost the fewer wickets should be declared the winners.

That was Leycett, so there was confusion as to who actually did prevail on the day.

Ryan Roberts (48) and Shoaib Akhtar (31) made the most progress with the bat in Burslem’s innings, while Matt Johnson (3-31) and Jaidel Richardson (3-42) impressing with the ball.

Leycett saw Dan Redfern hit six fours in his 60 in reply, while Reece White chipped in with 30.

They needed nine off the last two overs and appeared set for victory – but Burslem struck back again to leave the scores level.

Sam Waterhouse (3-19), Matthew Morris (3-33) and Callum Harrison (3-44) all claimed three wickets for Burslem.

Whitmore continued their fine start to the summer as they beat Ashcombe Park in style to make it a hat-trick of victories.

Whitmore took first use on home turf and managed to stick 218-9 on their board from their 45-over allocation.

Caleb Mierkalns was quick out of the blocks with a 31-ball 52, which included seven fours and three sixes.

Fraser James (44) also played his part, with Matthew McAll chipping in with 24.

Anis Raza, Riecko Parker-Cole and Max Hill shared six of the wickets to fall.

Ashcombe Park’s run chase never got off the ground, despite Parker-Cole top-scoring with 31.

They were bundled out for 99 as Bilal Hussain and Oliver Johnson snared 3-17 and 3-18 respectively.

The remaining wickets were shared by Muhammad Imran and McAll.

Wood Lane also have a perfect record after three rounds of matches as they saw off the challenge of Elworth.

Visitors Wood Lane managed to reach 234-3 from their first half of the afternoon’s action.

A thrilling finish ensued, but Elworth couldn’t quite match their rivals as they were restricted to 228-9 when stumps were drawn.

Norton in Hales secured their first victory of the campaign as they won at Hem Heath seconds.

The visitors put themselves in the driving seat by posting 238-7 from their 45 overs.

Aaron Thomason led the way for the Tractor Boys with 59, which featured seven fours and two sixes.

Support was forthcoming from Isaac Foster and Jack Furnival, who contributed 42 and 41 respectively.

Harvey Ault (3-61) took the bowling plaudits for Hem Heath, backed up by two wickets apiece for Jack Jones and Nazakat Ali.

Yohan Liyanage (28) gave Hem Heath a handy start in reply, before Ali showcased his all-round talent with 57. He struck seven boundaries.

But it wasn’t quite enough for Hem Heath as they were dismissed for 182.

Luke Taylor grabbed 4-22 for Norton in Hales and there were a couple of wickets for Anthony Sheeran.

Matthew Goodwin hit the ton trail for Cheadle in their home victory over Knypersley.

Alfie Bonehill (33) and Sam Cliffe (28) made starts, but at 115-5, Cheadle needed another partnership to enable them to post a competitive total.

And it was Goodwin and James Sellers who joined forces to ultimately power Cheadle to 256-8.

Goodwin hit 14 fours and two sixes in his 100, while Sellers’ 50 contained three fours and two maximums.

Jack Muni scooped 3-30 with the ball for Knypersley, while there were a couple of wickets for Jacob Cumberbatch.

It was always going to be a tough ask for Knypersley to chase down such a big total.

Liam Hopkins compiled an unbeaten 28, Muni and Rob James both chipped in with 23, while Paul Goodwin weighed in with 21.

But they never looked like challenging Cheadle as they were limited to 160-8 when stumps were drawn.

Sellers and Charlie Goldstraw shared four of the wickets to fall.

Eccleshall prevailed on their visit to Bignall End.

A superb 130 from Andrew Calvert was the highlight of Bignall End’s 304-6 after they batted first at Boon Hill. Calvert’s innings featured 13 fours and five sixes, with Greg Clark chipping in with a rapid 66, which included six boundaries and four sixes.

Tom Hibbert and Jack Knapper added 38 and 30 not out respectively, while there were two wickets for Aunn Shah.

Half-centuries from openers Jon Maskrey (55) and Jake Mills (50) fronted the Bignall End response.

Ahsam Zaroof (39) and Irfan Khan (34no) were also in the runs, but Bignall End closed on 273-5.

Matthew Wright took a couple of wickets for Eccleshall.
