Week 13 – The intense heat played its part across the county with a series of remarkable results on Saturday ,
including a number of close finishes and a tie which made news around the cricket world.
PREMIER DIVISION
Almost impossible to pick the result of the day in the Prem as five of the six games were in contention – the top two both losing, the bottom side winning handsomely, two emphatic wins and a hard-fought draw. Few would begrudge Lindow the ‘team of the day’ nomination after they did the double over leaders
Hyde, a dramatic 5 run win snatched with just four balls remaining. Max Law (72 off 155 bs) & Dan Newton (55 off 79) patiently added 109 as they kept the testing spin attack at bay, but James Chew’s pace changed things, the left-armer claiming 5-53 as Lindow went from 150-2 to 197-7, ending with 215. Luke Young matched his Cheshire team-mates for application, batting almost 3 hrs for 92 (143 bs) as he & Ryan Maisuria (33 off 82) added 120 for the 2nd wkt, but Lindow’s determination in the heat saw them turn the tide, reducing Hyde to 188-8. The 9th pair then added 20 as the tension mounted, but Sam Battersby’s golden arm did the trick as he bowled Dave Fitzsimmons for a famous win.
Didsbury were unable to capitalise after going down by 68 runs at home to Brooklands, Kevin Carroll playing the definition of a captain’s knock, helping Ben Cunliffe (73) add 114 before reaching his ton in the last over, celebrating by taking 17 off the last 4 balls as Brooklands finished with 232-9. Caroll went on to claim 3-31 as AJ Hart’s proven stamina saw him return 5-36 in 17 skillful overs, Dids all out for 164. Nantwich were thus the big winners of the day, their fantastic run of form in the league continuing with an dazzling win over high-flying Timperley, Yash Pednekar (111* off 86 bs) and Ali Chugtai (104* off 85 bs) adding a superb unbroken 228 in just 28.1 os as Nantwich won by 10 wkts. It was almost as emphatic for Bowdon, who recorded an eye-catching 9 wkt win at Alderley Edge, skipper Jack Tipton making a wonderful 116* (138 bs) as he and Ross Zelem (70*) added an unbroken 190, lifting Bowdon to mid-table. In contrast, grim defiance was the order of the day for Chester BH as they had to block out from 110-8 to claim a draw with lowly Neston, who had earlier battled to make 207-7 and at least had the satisfaction of 15 pts taken from a tough afternoon.
Still not decided your result of the day? Widnes’ stunning demolition of Oxton might persuade you, the bottom club adding to their solitary league win with a stunning demolition job at Townfield Lane. The hosts chose to bat in perfect conditions but saw their alarmingly faltering season take a body blow as they collapsed to 49 all out, Palitha Kumara’s spin giving him 6-21, Widnes completing the formalities for the loss of just one wkt. Joint top after winning their first four games, Oxton now find themselves in the bottom two and will need to dig deep after a disheartening week for them.

Division 1
Div 1 ended ‘as you were’ with the top four all winning, the gap between them and the other sides growing. Cheadle remain on top after their excellent season continued, this time with a workmanlike 6 wkt win over Toft at Kingsway, who were restricted to 171-9 in their allocation, Rohan Fernando’s 70 the highlight for the visitors. James Clift top scored with 62 in the Cheadle chase, Dan Brown making a swift 35 and skipper Josh Dooler following up his 3-22 with 36. Second place Bramhall matched the leaders almost blow-for-blow, also winning by 6 wkts, also after a great effort in the field to restrict visitors Maritime to just 130, Ollie Webb claiming 3-6. Skipper Nick Cantello then followed up his 67 last week with 66, he and Greg Dixon (36) enjoying another fruitful stand to help secure 20 pts. Port Sunlight stayed in third and passed 200 pts for the season after they had a wonderful day out at Sale, winning by 10 wkts after openers Wayne Greve (100 off 122 bs) and Ben Nuttall (75* off 70) put on an unbroken 199 in just 32 overs, Sale’s Cam Kwok having earlier made 90.
Remarkably, Macclesfield’s opening pair also added 199 together in their game at Grappenhall, Andrew Poppa (114 off 101 bs) and James Longhorn (113* off 136 bs) making it another torrid afternoon in the heat for the bottom side. Whatever encouragement Grappers may have felt after finally breaking that stand dissipated quickly seeing Joe Moores stride out to bat, the Eng U19 player pinging 45 off 20 before John Birchall showed he’s never too old to learn, also making a quickfire 45* which enabled Macc to run up a humongous 366-4. Grappers capitulated for just 90 as Macc won by 276 runs. The other two matches had a significant bearing at the foot of the table, Marple grabbing a vital 20 pts and righting the wrongs of successive defeats after they won handsomely by 121 runs at Davenham. Max Fitzgerald made 71 in Marple’s 235-8, spinners Charlie Hodgson (4-31) and Niall Greenlees (3-5) then to the fore as Dav were all out 114. Hot work at Urmston and hot stuff from visitors Stockport Georgians, who made it three wins in a row after bundling the hosts out for 173. Urmston were 90-0 and were left ruing their subsequent collapse as SG grafted hard to secure a three wkt win in the final over, Jordan Richards making 58.
Division 2
In Div 2, fine games saw dramatic finishes. Leaders Alvanley stayed on top but had to really work to see off a dogged Stockport side. Two stands of 105 for the 6th wkt were the feature of the game, the one for Alvanley between captain Michael Rowlands (61) & Corey McCarthy (60) rescuing Alv from 113-5 as they finished with 243-8. Stockport replied poorly at first but a lively cameo from Sajjad Shah perked them up, Naveed Gondal (66) and Dan Taylor (45) then partnering well but ending one big over short of victory as Alv won by 11 runs. Bollington stayed second after showing they could graft for the points, sneaking home by 2 wkts in the 49th over at Haslington chasing 199 in an intriguing contest. Third place Romiley entertain Bolly next week and will have been buoyed by their 84 run win at Ashley, especially the form of skipper Alex Hooton, who hit 63 off 48 bs before returning 5-34, and a third half-century of the season for Isaac Willett.
In a fascinating parallel with events at Haslington, Oulton Park also won by 2 wkts away from home, also chasing 199! OP had Nick Ball to thank for a terrific 80 at upwardly mobile Christleton, helping his side recover from 84-5 to claim a priceless 20 pts after turning the form book on its head, OP thankful the 39 extras they conceded weren’t more costly. A run fest by the river as Upton’s long trip to Ashton OM was more than worth it, Chris McArthur smashing 122 (97 bs) and Lee Dixon 87, the pair adding 165 in 20 overs, Joe Green hammering 60 off 34 to top it off as Upton piled up 356-7. Skipper James Marshall did his bit with 88 but AOM were all out 250 and remain over 50 pts from safety. Cheadle Hulme pulled off an exciting 2 wkt win with 2 overs left in an excellent match at NE Cheshire after Oliver Willett made 71 & Ben Balderson 75.
Division 3
In Div 3, the match of the day at the Flacca had a desperately close – and by all accounts controversial – finish, leaders Tattenhall losing by 3 runs to Hawk Green. HG skipper Dylan Heginbothom top scored with 72, overseeing a crucial 41 for the last wkt as HG finished with 208. Tatt’s reply was nip and tuck, recovering from 71-4 to reach 197-7 as the tension matched the heat for intensity. With the score on 205-9 reports indicate a ‘Mankad’ was effected to end the match, although Tattenhall retain a 26 pt advantage at the top with HG now second. Oakmere, who started the day second, surprisingly fell in a heap at home to Runcorn, who made it three wins in a row with a 47 run triumph. Runcorn were stagnating at 128-7 but David McNamara whacked 55 and helped Neil Maher (84 off 128) add 78 for the 8th wkt, 27 wides also helping the Runcorn cause. Oakmere quickly tumbled to 43-5, McNamara cashing in with 3-40 as the hosts
were bowled out for 164.
Hard to guess who was the more surprised at Walton Lea as Warrington’s dip in from hit a new low, thrashed by 9 wkts by basement side Over Peover who knocked off their 136 target in just 21 overs for a morale-boosting 20 pts, Mohammed Aslam (2-5 and 51) the OP star man. The gap between OP and struggling Mobberley thus closed further as Mobb’s horror run continued, suffering a seventh straight loss as visitors Hale Barns reached their 155 target inside 22 overs at Church Lane for a 7 wkt win. Winnington Park had Kealan Blattner (80 off 73) and Travi Scholes (48) to thank, the pair adding 105 to lift WP to 191-4 at Middlewich, a final total of 194 indicating just how well they had batted! Blattner then ran out Middlewich skipper Nick Gill as the hosts were well beaten, 110 all out. A high-scoring game at Heaton Mersey saw three half-centuries for the hosts provide the base for a total of 282, but visitors Barrow clearly took note as four half centuries took them to 283-6 with an over in hand for an impressive 4 wkt win, continuing an encouraging 2025 for the west-Cheshire side.
CCCL 2ND XI CRICKET GOES AROUND THE WORLD!
A match that would ordinarily attract little attention between two 2nd XI sides struggling in Div 1 ended up receiving global coverage after an unprecedented and extraordinary conclusion. Choosing to bat at Marple, Bramhall had posted 201. In reply, Will Darby (73) & James Crisall (54) added 119 for the 3rd wkt to leave Marple sitting pretty at 166-2 in the 43rd, and despite a couple of wkts falling, Marple started the final over 201-5, one run needed to win and 5 wkts in hand. Josh Patel then produced the over of his life. With fielders surrounding the batsmen, Patel clean bowled three in a row to record a hat-trick. The fourth ball of the over saw Ben Bailey trapped lbw, leaving skipper James Hirst to face the music. Hirst drove his first ball which was parried at short cover, and as the batsmen ran, Bramhall got the ball to keeper Ed Gray who ran out the sprawling non -striker. An ecstatic Bramhall celebrated a miraculous tie, Marple in total disbelief, and as news spread of the final over, it was referenced the following day on Test Match Special and even covered in a report by The Times of India! Both sides took 15 pts with cricket very much the winner.
2ND XI CRICKET
A magnificent opening stand of 221 between the in-form Chris Becker (86) and Evan Turner (113 off 97 bs) had basement side Neston down and out, leaders Didsbury as unrelenting as the sun, piling up 361-9 before skittling the hosts for 140. Another opening bat with a ton was Scott Craig of Toft, hitting a brilliant 151 (89 bs, 3×6, 25×4) as his side raced to their victory target of 240 inside 38 overs to beat Cheadle by 7 wkts. A stand of 139 for the 2nd wkt between Dom Peter (76) & Jude Mahadanaarachchi (78) secured a healthy 8 wkt win for Chester BH over Timperley, the result worsened for Timpers as Stockport Georgians notched a third win of the season. SG faced Hyde and made 182, Hyde conceding 39 extras and no.11 Jonah Wall helping add 19 for the last, which was to prove worth its weight as, with ball in hand, Wall dismissed the Hyde top four, finishing with 5-38 as SG won by 20 runs. Brooklands recovered from 17-3 to make 185 against visitors Nantwich who were all out 127 while Oxton just got home against Widnes, 94 from Grant Hughes a big part of a thrilling 1 wkt win. Div 1 leaders Lindow march on, Finn Gavaghan (108) and Ben Hamilton-Ryan (111) batting brilliantly to see 306-5 taken off the Alvanley attack, Alv all out 224 after a jolly last wkt stand of 48 in 4 os. Maritime beat Sale by 6 wkts to stay second, Upton knocked off 90 in 8 os to thrash H.Mersey, while the tie between Marple & Bramhall was covered in more detail earlier in this newsletter. Whether that was a more noteworthy result than Grappenhall recording successive wins is for you to decide, Grappers beating Macc by 16 runs. In Div 2 Calum Wilson hit 67 and took 3-8 as Alderley Edge bowled Oulton Park out for 97 to win by 54 runs, extending their lead after second place Romiley lost at home to Ashton OM. Urmston closed the gap to Romiley after a tense 17 run win at Stockport. Big runs at P.Sunlight as Mark Davies (100) and Dan Harper (121) put on 203 together, PS going on to beat Haslington by 107 runs.
Winnington Park & Ashley remain level on pts in Div 3 after WP beat Davenham by 81 runs and Ashley got from 65-5 to 210-8 and beat Bollington by 2 wkts.
NE Cheshire are third after a superb chase of 261 at Chester BH to win by 5 wkts, while Declan Cavanagh made 107 for Timperley in their 334-7 against Oxton. Jack Wylie took 6-37 to help H.Barns to a crucial 5 wkt win over fellow strugglers Christleton.
