ECB Premier Division: Northern cut gap at top as Rainhill frustrate Ormskirk
Colwyn Bay | 247/9 (53.2) | drew with | Birkenhead Park | 198/6 (45)
Firwood Bootle | 252/7 (57) | lost to | Wigan | 254/3 (43.1) | by seven wickets |
Formby | 294/3 (48) | beat | Wallasey | 290/3 (59.2) | by seven wickets |
Leigh | 176 (50.1) | lost to | Northern | 220/8 (53.5) | by 44 runs |
Rainford | 220/8 (55) | drew with | Newton-le-Willows | 185/7 (47)
Rainhill | 179/9 (51) | drew with | Ormskirk | 276/3 (51) |
Left-arm spinner Dan Wilson topped his personal best for the second week running as Northern closed the gap on league leaders Ormskirk.
Wilson’s 8/74 earned a 44-run win at Leigh, after the visitors’ lower order helped them recover from 120/5 to post 220/8.
Home skipper Mattie McKiernan’s 64 took him past 900 league runs for the season but nobody was able to stick around with him as Wilson ran riot.
Ormskirk remain in pole position for a third successive title, but their lead was cut to 34 points as they had to settle for a draw at Rainhill.
Home skipper Jamie Harrison and last man Stephen Pennington saw out the last two overs to close on 179/9 as Toby Bulcock’s 6/53 came to nothing; earlier, half-centuries for Calum Turner, Tom Brown and George Lavelle led the visitors to 276/3.
Formby had the better of a run-fest at Cricket Path against Wallasey. The visitors piled on 290/3 thanks to Connor Windell’s 119 – his maiden century – assisted by captain Greg Beaver’s 94 and Evan Withe’s 69.
But it wasn’t enough thanks to Tom Billington’s 110 and an unbeaten 105 from Lucas Kennedy, both making their first league ton for Formby.
The bottom two shared 16 points equally, but neither Colwyn Bay nor Birkenhead Park got the win they desperately needed. Zack Gidlow top-scored with 54 in the hosts’ 247/9, as Safi Abdullah claimed 6/76; Andrew Clarke made 79 as the visitors closed on 198/6.
Bay are nine points clear of Park, but a daunting 37 shy of safety with six games to go.
Wigan pulled themselves clear of danger with a seven-wicket win at Firwood Bootle, chasing 253 thanks to Charles Taylor’s unbeaten 117. Steve Rimmer had top-scored with 94 for the hosts.
Newton-le-Willows are third from bottom after their trip to Rainford ended in stalemate. Nihal Desai made 50 for the visitors as they posted 220/8, and Ben Walkden did likewise for the hosts in their 185/7.

Division One: Rare defeat for Liverpool as promotion race hots up
Lytham | 188/9 (49) | drew with | Highfield | 255/7 (53.3)
Old Xaverians | 113 (39.5) | lost to | Maghull | 178 (57.5) | by 65 runs |
Orrell Red Triangle | 147/7 (43.5) | beat | Liverpool | 146 (31.2) | by three wickets |
Sefton Park | 230/6 (52.4) | beat | New Brighton | 131 (36.4) | by 99 runs |
Southport & Birkdale | 81/8 (21.2) | beat | Hightown St Marys | 80 (32.3) | by two wickets |
Spring View | 253/7 (47.5) | beat | Sutton | 92 (33.2) | by 161 runs |
Leaders Liverpool lost only their third game of the season as Orrell Red Triangle made up ground in an exciting promotion race.
Only Dan Harrison’s 72 troubled the Orrell attack as the visitors managed just 146; after Mark Waddington made 58 in reply the hosts were 123/2 and coasting, before a collapse left them limping over the line with three wickets to spare.
The other three sides in the top five all won, and all five have a realistic chance of a spot in the top two.
Spring View racked up 253/7 against Sutton, thanks to 91 from Lewis Pawsey and 58 from Declan Mulvey, setting up a 161-run victory.
Sefton Park have won five of their last six, with New Brighton their latest conquests; skipper Paul Horton’s 70 underpinned their 230/6, and the visitors fell 99 runs short.
And Southport & Birkdale’s spinners did the damage against Hightown St Marys – Muhammad Kashif and Bobby Wincer claimed five scalps each to roll the visitors for just 80 before Matt White’s own five-for caused a fright for the hosts, who got home with two wickets in hand.
With only one relegation spot thanks to Lytham’s withdrawal from the Comp, Hightown sit second from bottom.
Either side of them are Maghull and Old Xaverians, who met on Saturday – Maghull claimed a crucial win thanks largely to Greg Coogan’s 6/35, which ensured the hosts fell well short of their target of 179. Joe Campbell made 67 for the visitors, while Colin Gibson took 6/38.
Lytham’s last pair frustrated Highfield, who posted 255/7 with 70 for Harry Moxham. Myles Child made 72 for the visitors but the others fell around him, before Thomas Hessey and Anthony Mulligan closed out on 188/9.
Division Two: Ainsdale back on top as Auwardt runs riot again
Ainsdale | 220/6 (39.5) | beat | St Helens Town | 207 (47.3) | by 13 runs |
Fleetwood Hesketh | 163/9 (53.1) | beat | Caldy | 159 (49.3) | by one wicket |
Norley Hall | 156/6 (39.1) | beat | Wavertree | 154 (50.3) | by four wickets |
Prescot & Odyssey | 164/9 (63) | drew with | Northop Hall | 213 (47.4)
Prestatyn | 119 (38.5) | lost to | Southport Trinity | 196 (59.4) | by 77 runs |
Whitefield | 223 (51.4) | beat | Parkfield Liscard | 116 (34.5) | by 107 runs |
Ainsdale’s Dilanka Auwardt powered his side back to the top of Division Two with a tight 13-run win over St Helens Town.
The Sri Lankan pro is 22 wickets clear of anyone else in the league after his 6/57, his 10th five-for of the season. And he was the difference on Saturday, running through Town’s lower order after Matty Bielby’s 56 had got them to 186/5 chasing 221.
Harry Beddard top-scored with 78 for the leaders, who now have a 57-point promotion cushion.
Northop Hall slip to second after their draw at Prescot & Odyssey. John Nation claimed 7/59 to dismiss the Welsh side for 213, with 53 for Finley Jenkins, before Harsh Shonak played a lone hand with an unbeaten 91 to guide the hosts to safety at 164/9.
Caldy’s promotion hopes took another blow at Fleetwood Hesketh, whose last pair inched over the line chasing 160. Teenager Ben Woollam, in just his third 1st XI game, hit the winning boundary off Adam Brown, who had already claimed 5/50; earlier, skipper Mike Grealis made 63 for the visitors.
Whitefield spinner Rob Magee took 5/19 to see off Parkfield Liscard, after Charlie Munroe made 65 in the Roby side’s 223.
Ryan Wood starred with bat and ball in Norley Hall’s four-wicket win over Wavertree, taking 5/27 to restrict the visitors to 154, then seeing his side home with an unbeaten 54. And Prestatyn skipper Adam Tidswell took 8/64 against Southport Trinity but couldn’t prevent his side slipping to a 77-run defeat. Scott Francis made 68 in the visitors’ 196, before the hosts collapsed from 98/2 to 119 all out.
