North Yorkshire & South Durham

Match Weekend 5 Review: Reviewing the North Yorkshire South Durham Results.

Despite the ongoing dry spell, there were obviously some tricky batting conditions sprinkled across the NYSD at the weekend, though there were still ten scores in excess of 250 as well.

Batting at Marton

Premier Division

Stockton continue to make the pace having picked up a fourth win of the season at Bishop Auckland. The hosts chose to bat, and opener Brandon Lusk continued his superb form, making 61 before being run out, now the joint leading run scorer in the top flight. A mid-innings wicket flurry meant skipper Matty Cowling needed to make 32 down the order to take Bishop to a final total of 215 all out from the penultimate ball of the innings. Adam Hickey was the most successful visiting bowler with 3-24. Kevin Ward started the reply strongly with a 31-ball 45, opening partner Hickey made 63 and Reyan Nadeem an unbeaten 67 as Stockton made light work of the chase, coasting home in the 32nd over for a 6-wicket win. Arthur Jones took 3-43 for Bishop.

Barnard Castle moved into second with a thumping home win over Hartlepool. James Clarkson led the way with 55, but it took a healthy partnership between Josh Bousfield (43) and pro Shubham Sharma (85) to bump up the score to the usual Vere Road expectations. Barney were dismissed for 269 in the final over as Max Jackson (3-57) took 3 in 4 balls to complete the innings. Angus Catto picked up 3-48 from 11 overs earlier in the piece. No visiting batter could pass 30 as all the 5-man Barney attack got into the action, Sharma the most productive with 3-22, ‘Pool a rather tame 102 all out.

Darlington RA have won their three home games, this one a 2-wicket win in a low scoring affair at Brinkburn Road. The Middlesbrough batting couldn’t find any rhythm against the reliable Matthew Pillans (4-45) and Sachithra Serasinghe (4-27) and they were dismissed for 139 in the 40th over. The home line up found conditions just as tricky against the Boro seamers Harry Williams (4-42) and Ahsan Shrindal (3-39), but from the depths of 65/7, Pillans and Doug Mulholland (32*) put together a recovery stand, and the RA eventually got over the line eight down.

The other three games were drawn. Marton found themselves in some trouble at 70/5 hosting Great Ayton but pro Muhammad Irfan (59) and Tom Miller (63) added 105 to turn things around and Marton declared on 228/8 after 49 overs. Leading wicket taker Suminda Lakshan took 4-75 in 12 overs for Ayton. Lakshan made 63 and Jon Grainge 42 after the break and Ayton looked nicely set at 124/2 but the spin of Irfan (4-31) and Sam Berry (3-66) restricted them to 173/8.

Saltburn looked cooked when their eighth wicket – that of Husnain Bukhari for 68 – fell to the first ball of the 36th over at Richmond, but they hung on at 183/9, the last pair surviving 13 balls after Liam Crooks (32) departed to the penultimate ball of a 15-over spell from Shafi Ghafari (3-64). The hosts had earlier set 226/8, with a solid start from Rob Carr (40) and Gary Pratt (45) and good acceleration from Joe White (59 in 39 balls). Bukhari and Ollie Stewart both conceded 73 runs in 15 over spells, the former with three victims, the latter four.

Robbie Atkinson (63), Rob Foreman (38) and Fin Morris (36) helped Stokesley plunder 263/9 from the Norton attack shorn of James Minto as he was making a maiden half century for Durham in the County Championship. Having declared after 48 overs, Stokesley looked favourite to win with Norton at 65/6, but 71* from Kenzie Peakman took the score to 208/9 at stumps, the ninth wicket falling from the final ball to Harry Peirson (4-45).

Division One

Marske kept up their good start to 2025 with a maximum point return at Sedgefield. The hosts chose first use but had no answer to u-16 Max Emsley (4-29) and Asim Akhtar (4-17) and were dismissed for a mere 83. Marske lost 4 wickets in the 15 overs it took to chase down.

Billingham also collected a full house with a 51-run victory over Barnard Castle at Chiltons Avenue. John Watson made 48 and Tom Harper 42 as Synners posted 216/8 and, whilst Jack Mensforth continued good form with 81, Michael Bargewell-Cook took 3-28 and Barney succumbed for 165 in the 38th over.

Though Bedale skipper Danial Rafiq set the innings off with a 22-ball 43, the rest of the line up struggled against the spin of Charlie Pierson (6-48) and Martin Philpot (3-46) and they were dismissed for 135 at Guisborough. The home side’s Division One batting woes have been well documented in these reports and they continued once more as Owen Kelly starred with 6-24 and Dan Edwards grabbed 3-28 to take out the Priorymen for 93.

49 from Danny Clarke and 38 from Harvey Spaxman had Thornaby in a seemingly healthy position at 157/3, but a productive second spell from Ollie King (5-39) saw them dismissed in the 47th over for an even 200 at Feethams. Three down with just 44 on the board, a 140-run fourth wicket stand turned the game in favour of hosts Darlington. Usman Azeem made 67, but the star was u-17 Owen Harwood – just back from a lengthy injury absence – who remained unbeaten on 82 in the Quakers’ 6-wicket win.

Hasan Razaq (39), Jordan Leech (40), Carl Chillingsworth (48) and Shaf Rafiq (42) took Normanby Hall to 251/9 against Wolviston at Cricket Lane. Saad Sarfraz (36) and Pat Savarimuthu (55) featured in the Wolves’ response of 193 all out, but the bowling of Matthew Rose (3-43), Alfie Street (3-57) and Dhanish Hussain (3-41) kept the points secure for Normanby.

Michael Platt (3-41) and Tom Stockton (3-45) had Seaton Carew in some trouble on 84/7, but Jonny Mee (49*) and Aimal Wafa (39) added 85 for the eighth wicket and Seaton reached 183/8 at Hornby Park. Which proved to be more than enough, as visitors Richmondshire collapsed from 51/0 to 75 all out, Jack Turnbull (4-29) and Joe Cushlow (3-32) the main architects of the Dalesmen’s demise.

The six winning sides this week form the top six in the Division.

Division Two

Saltburn retain the lead following a dramatic tied game at home to Marton. Liam Kennedy (52), Matty Hutchinson (39) and Danny Havelock (40*) took Marton to 191 all out in the 47th over, as Harry Howell continued in wicket-taking form with 5-44 from 14.2 overs. Saltburn’s response centred around the batting of Simon Bowes, who entered the fray at 48/3 and then made 100 of the next 143 runs from only 82 balls faced. Ash Field took 3-66 and the last Saltburn pair required 26 when they came together. Bowes struck two boundaries to reach three figures at the end of the 39th over and only three more runs were required. Bowled by u-15 Louis Veazey, a two was struck from the fifth ball of the 40th over to tie the scores, but the youngster snaffled a caught and bowled from the final ball to finish with 3-14 and both sides collected 16 points.

Rockliffe Park had no such drama at Park Drive as James Layfield- Carroll (5-34) and Mark Swanwick (5-35) despatched Hartlepool for a pitiful 72. Despite losing a wicket to the second ball after the innings break, Luke Telford made a calming 35* in a 6-wicket win to place Park second, 6 points adrift.

Shildon had a similarly early end to proceedings once Cordie McKendry (5-28) and Rob Nevison (3-16) ousted Darlington for 122, of which Tom Park-Bradley made 38. Greg Upton treated the reply like a T20 and smashed 80* from 38 balls in a 9-wicket win for the Railway.

Stockton’s third win came at the expense of Whitby at the Close Protection Security ground. Alf Jacobs top scored with 32 from 184 all out for the Seasiders, as Adam Beaumont (3-51) and Tom Gaffney (3-39) helped to keep the scorers busy. Matthew Everson made 53 in response and thirty-plus contributions from Saif Rehman, Rob Peregrine and Ian Richards secured a 5-wicket win for the Swifties.

Kudos to the Redcar batters, who pulled off a big chase at Acklam Park. Aleem Ditta’s second consecutive century takes him to the top of the Division two charts, 106 from 134 balls leading him to 270 from 3 innings and Boro to 252/9, of which Rory Cotterill contributed 35. Spinners Callum Brown (3-68) and Ian Patchett (3-86) saw some reward for perseverance, but then it was over to the visiting top order. Mitchell Brown (66) and Matthew Stokeld (55) added 116 for the first wicket and then Callum Brown (58*) and Jason Turnbull (55*) partnered for an unbroken 108 for the third to conclude the pursuit after 46 overs.

Northallerton’s Christiaan Bourbon-Leftley struck with the second ball of the innings and the South African would end up with 5-39 as Norton were restricted to 170 all out at Station Road, Lewis Day (31) and Callum Shields (39) striving to get the hosts to a competitive total. Will Goldsmith set the reply in motion with 51 before Bourbon-Leftley brought it home with 43* to secure a second consecutive win for the visitors.

Division Three

Often the tightest of the Divisions, the early form in the fourth tier doesn’t do anything to make the seasoned NYSD observer think 2025 might see otherwise.

Stokesley cling on to the lead, despite being defeated at Maltby. In apparently tricky batting conditions at Francis Park, Maltby were grateful to an unbeaten 42 from Michael Roberts to get them as far as 99 all out, as James Somers took 6-37 from 10 overs. Roberts then struck with the first ball after the break, before Owen Huggins (5-24) and Charlie Lythgoe (4-5) finished off Stokesley for a dismal 51.

Great Ayton have run into form, and Charlie Doyle inspired them to a home win over Yarm. Doyle took 4-36 and Oliver Gubbins 4-38 to dismiss the visitors for 153 in the 39th over. With Ayton then slipping to 38/3, Doyle (58*) joined Henry Shelton (52) in a decisive fourth wicket stand of 106.

Newton Aycliffe’s 46-run win over Blackhall sees them leapfrog their opponents in the standings. Tom Dearden (43) and Chris Palmer (49) provided the backbone of Aycliffe’s 198/9, as Dan Robson (3-42) and Joe Swallow (3-52) kept Blackhall ticking along. The visiting batters couldn’t do the business, dismissed for 152 by a 6-pronged attack, Ben Howard the best of them with 3-24.

Having come so close to a first win the previous week, Whitby sealed it this time round with a 4-wicket win over Guisborough at the Turnbull Ground. Andrew Wood (49) and Theo Clarke (40) helped the Seasiders to overcome 172/7, despite 3-33 from Steve Donlan. U-15 Jack Gash made 75 in the Guisborough effort.

Rockliffe Park’s u-15 Matty Watt struck with the first two balls and the last two balls of the Normanby Hall innings on his way to 5-32 from 9 overs. Richard Snowdon added 3-18 but James Tate (40) and Joe Ramsay (48) got the visitors as far as 172 all out. Gary Lee (86*) and Chris Lupton (65*) saw that target off without loss in the 32nd over.

The solitary drawn game came at Mandale Bottoms, and it was a tight affair containing two centuries. Sedgefield’s David Lamb dominated the first half of the day, making 117 before falling near the end of the visitors’ 225/6 in 40 overs. Amir Mukhtar’s 101 was a second consecutive ton, 139 added with Dumi Mpofu (48) after the first wicket fell without a run on the board. With 12 required from 16 balls and seven wickets in hand, Thornaby conspired to collapse to 220/9, with George Hampson (5-48) and David Budd (3-54) the wicket takers, the hosts left to contemplate a draw snatched from the jaws of victory.

Division Four

Billingham and Skelton Castle continue to set the early pace. Synners blew away Wolviston at Armstrong Park, Adam Greenwell taking over at the top of the run scoring charts with 72, supported by Robson James (46) and Chris Wilson (55*) in a total of 270/5 declared. Scott Shreeve (5-19) and Haider Ramzan (3-35) unpacked the Wolves for 93.

Skelton Castle’s youth continue to rack up the Saturday runs, u-17 Tom Hodgson (83*) and 44 from both u-16 Sam Malbon-Green and u-17 Jack Verrill leading their side to 253/7 at Marske, for whom u-17 James Drage took 3-53. The elder of the Malbon-Greens, u-17 Ben, took 4-32 as the hosts were bowled out for 124.

Third placed Richmondshire easily disposed of Northallerton, as Andy Dade (3-33) led a 5-handed attack to dismiss Town for 108. John Clark was 62* in a 9-wicket win.

Darlington RA emulated that margin of victory, though they were chasing a stiffer target at Preston. Azhar Iqbal made 55 out of 188/7 for the hosts, but Ben I’Anson (61), and youngsters u-13 Kian Hutton (68*) and u-14 Myles Price (43*) made short work of that target, home inside 30 overs.

Shashank Garg starred for Newton Aycliffe at Bedale but, when dismissed for 72, the innings subsided from 114/1 to 155 all out, with u-17 James Pratt profiting to the tune of 3-23. Dan Weldon’s 5-53 kept Aycliffe in with a shout, but 40 from James Trueman held Bedale together and they won by 4 wickets.

Yarm u-16 Jude Crack fell just three short of a maiden century and, supported by a maiden half century from u-17 Daksh Gaur (53*) and runs from Tahir Javed (43*), a declaration was applied at 269/5. Visitors Bishop Auckland responded with 187/8, led by 63 from u-17 AJ Wild. Sandy Singh picked up 3-23 as Yarm used eight bowlers to try and find the win.

Sunday Cricket

Premier

They aren’t topping the Division, but Marc Symington’s youthful Norton side have maximum points after three games. U-17 Archie Fawcett made 53 as they set a target of 195/8 at Darlington RA. Subsequently, 4-12 from Nadeem Hanif took Norton to a 67-run win.

A remarkable 6-5 in 4 overs from Charlie Baldam sent Normanby Hall crashing from 59/3 to 67 all out at home to leaders Marton, for whom Mark Green was undefeated on 40 in a 10-wicket win.

Hartlepool’s 103-run win over bottom club Redcar saw Dom Barlow hit 101 from just 64 balls as Pool made 219/7.

Darlington’s Sam Cull was another centurion, with 132 out of 228/6 at home to Wolviston. Nasir Khan made a rapid 59 in the middle order, but the visitors were all out for 161, u-16 Jack Glenton with 3-17 in his 8 overs.

Northern Conference

Billingham’s Scott Shreeve followed up a 5-fer on Saturday by dominating his side’s overwhelming home victory against Northallerton, who lost their 100% record. Shreeve made an undefeated 123 from 105 balls – a first NYSD ton – and, with Chris Moore (45) and Chris Wilson (57*) chipping in, Synners declared on 244/2. 5-18 from Luke Samuels had Town reeling at 26/6 and, though James Randle made 41, Shreeve nipped in with 3-8 to end the innings at 89.

A fourth win of the season for Stockton sees them lead Billingham by 3 points at the top of the standings. Grant Worrall top scored with 42 at Yarm, for whom stalwart Charles Holt collected 3-37 and a target of 184/9 was set. U-14 Zidan Mustafa took 5-13 from 8 overs in the middle of the innings and Yarm were a hefty 88 runs shy of parity when the final wicket fell.

6-22 from Jack Gallimore set Bishop Auckland up to hammer Rockliffe Park by 9 wickets at Kingsway. Paul Barrow was 41* in the 14th over when the Park total of 72 was surpassed.

Wins for Hartlepool’s fourth string are few and far between, the side admirably used as a development squad, but they defeated an also youthful Sedgefield by 27 runs at Park Drive on Sunday. U-14 Finlay Coverdale top scored with 47 from 184/9, as u-17 Charlie Lobb grabbed 3-19 in 8 overs. Sedgefield u-17 Ollie Johnson made 49 in reply, and George Hampson 45* but the eight-strong bowling battalion saw success in the 38th over with the visitors at 157.

The game at Thornaby went to the wire. U-15 Joe Rutherford top scored with 59 for visitors Barnard Castle as they made 185/8, of which David Smith took 3-40. Oliver Welsby then took 3-28 and u-15 Oli Greves 4-29 and Thornaby looked cooked at 94/8, until Nick Wright chimed in with eleven fours in an unbeaten 56 made from 42 balls. He and Smith came together with the score at 140/9 in the 34th over and almost pulled off the unlikely victory, Thornaby ending on 184/9, the last over a frantic mixture of byes, wides and dots to increase the tension.

Southern Conference

Leaders Stokesley continue to score at a blistering rate but may need to improve their carrot-dangling skills, as Marske had little interest in pursuing 289/3, even though they were given 46 overs. Tom Kendrew blasted a 91-ball 149* (23 x 4, 2 x 6), his second “daddy hundred” of the Sunday campaign, and Alex Hadfield added 60 before the hosts called a halt. U-12 Kenji Marwood-Buckle took 3-37 in 10 overs after the break, but Marske refused to buckle, with 47 from Max Gray seeing them to 159/8.

Skelton Castle hammered Marton to close the gap a little. Daniel Belsham (70), u-17 Tom Hodsgon (67) and u-15 George Verrill (51*) featured heavily in 261/4 declared from 39 overs. Afterwards, u-16 Sam Malbon-Green took 4-13 to help dismiss Marton for 94.

There were wickets for Jamie Ellison (3-53) and Daniel Gregor (3-10) as visitors Saltburn declared on 168/9, with u-17 Rowan Midgeley having made an even 50. Sam Morrison (3-19) and Jacob Bailes (4-3) reduced Guisborough to 74 all out at Fountains Garth.

Whitby opener Charlie Parker scored a jazzy 100* from just 90 balls, sharing in century stands with both Will Richardson (57) and Jack Stentiford (56*), a declaration arriving as Parker reached three figures in the 35th over with the score at 264/3. Opening pair Jack Allanson (4-29) and u-17 Billy Blake (3-29) ensured Maltby were all out for 122.

6-27 in six overs from Middlesbrough u-16 Finley Smith restricted Great Ayton to 118 all out at Acklam Park, and fellow u-16 Leo Kitson was 47* when Middlesbrough passed the winning post with 6 wickets in hand.
