Sunday cup-ties

Congratulations to Coal Aston CC, who won the Mick Savage Trophy at Darfield, in a repeat of the previous day’s league game, beating Upper Haugh in an excellent encounter by four wickets.

Upper Haugh elected to bat first and were soon in trouble at 30-4, with Joe Cooper (3-28) taking three early wickets. 17-year-old Connor Sanderson then stepped up with a brilliant 100 to enable his team to set a competitive target with 193-7 in 40 overs.

When Coal Aston replied, thirties from Dave Rodgers and skipper Ben Hall, and a brisk 28 from Jon Trower, took them to 111-2, and although two wickets then fell for four runs, Ben Vandrill’s unbeaten 39 took his side to victory with 17 balls to spare.

Ben Hall was presented the Mick Savage Trophy by Mrs Savage, and Connor Sanderson was adjudged player-of-the-match. Our thanks go to Darfield CC, who did their usual excellent job of staging the day.

In the second semi-final of the K3 Dental Cup, Wakefield Thornes beat York by five wickets at Clifton Park.

After they had chosen to bat first, Will Fraine (53) and Breidyn Shaper (75) helped York total 244-9 in their 40 overs. Joe Billings, with 122 not out off 95 balls including 18 fours, then dominated Thornes’ reply, and they won by five wickets with ten balls to spare.

Wakefield Thornes will meet Doncaster Town in the K3 Dental final, at Savile Park, the home of Castleford CC, on Sunday 31 August (12.30 start)
