Round-up of games played on 9th & 10th August: South Yorkshire Results & Review

All four top clubs in the Premier Division won on Saturday, so it is a case of ‘as you were’ in the table. Shiregreen put leaders Wakefield Thornes in to bat at Field Lane, and Kieran Donnachie (87), James Rhodes (68) and Jawad Akhtar (58 not out) took the hosts to 294-4. Aslam Hayat made 80 in the Shiregreen response, but Akhtar completed a fine game with 4-56, and they were all out for 190. Second-placed Sheffield Collegiate were 119-6 at home to Cawthorne, with Mustafa Shinwari taking 4-62, before Thomas Currie (84) and Henry Eldred (46) added 101 for the seventh wicket, and the hosts posted 239-9. Shaaiq Choudhry then took 5-49 when the visitors replied, and they were all out for 169, Siraj Sajid top-scoring with 58. Mayank Mishra took 4-38 to help Cleethorpes bowl Doncaster Town out for 114 at Chichester Road; then an unbeaten 65 from Harry Warwick took the hosts to an eight-wicket win in the 19th over. Joel Whelan made 51 and Liam Johnson an unbeaten 43 off 28 balls to take Tickhill to 218-6 at home to Whitley Hall; then experienced campaigners James Moorhouse (41) and Neil Longhurst (42) helped the visitors to 156-4, but when five wickets fell for 45 runs, it took a last-wicket stand of 21 between skipper Dan Waldron and Biswick Kapala to see Whitley home by one wicket. Skipper Alex Grimes (86) was again the top scorer for Appleby Frodingham when they made 196 all out against Barnsley Woolley Miners at Shaw Lane, home skipper Boeta Beukes taking 5-41. Matt Harris then took 4-23 for the visitors, and Barnsley were all out for 127 in reply. In the relegation battle at Northfield Lane, Abdul Qayoom (69) and Hamzah Younis (70 not out) helped Wickersley Old Village to 256-6 against Hallam, who then claimed a one-wicket win with eleven balls to spare, thanks mainly to the efforts of Arun Sumanth (54), William Coates (51) and Arjith Ravi (44). 

Championship Division leaders Doncaster Town 2nds lost for the second week running, this time in a low-scoring game at home to Elsecar. Jak Hotchkiss took 4-26 after the visitors were put in to bat, and they were all out for 136. In Town’s reply, skipper Robert Grace carried his bat for an unbeaten 51, but Musa Altaf took 4-27 and they were all out for 122. Whiston Parish Church returned to winning ways and moved level with the leaders when an unbeaten 137 from Arman Jaffer enabled them to chase down a target of 286 to beat Sheffield Collegiate 2nds by three wickets. Earlier, Greg Mann (86 not out) and Matt Tyas (60 not out) had put on an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 125 in Collegiate’s 285-4. Harry Graham (51), Lewis Hogg (47) and Parteek Khasa (57) were all amongst the runs in third-placed Sprotbrough’s 260-7 away to Wath, for whom Alex Roebuck took 4-56. Daniel Wright (4-36) and Tim Braithwaite (4-9) then helped bowl the hosts out for just 59 in reply. Ackworth remain within striking distance of the leaders after beating Treeton at home. Mark Cummins (52) and Danny Latif (66 not out) added 103 for the fifth wicket in the visitors’ 250 all out, Luke Townsend taking 5-59 for the hosts. An unbeaten 95 from opener George Gillespie, who shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 98 with Edward Cole, then enabled Ackworth to win by five wickets. James Waller’s 4-25 helped Tickhill 2nds to bowl Aston Hall out for 166 at Green Lane; then an unbeaten 100 by James Eaton took the visitors to a five-wicket win. Opener Paul Cummins then made an unbeaten 102 in Rockingham Colliery’s 203-5 at home to Oughtibridge War Memorial; then Lasith Lakshan took 4-47 when the visitors were bowled out for 198 in reply. 

In Division 1, the leaders Upper Haugh had a big win over bottom side Penistone at Wentworth Road. Ali Asghar (59) and skipper Tommy Hyde (62) put the leaders in a strong position, then Samuel Thompson hit an unbeaten 101 off 81 balls to take them to 349-6. When the visitors replied, Habil Arshad took 4-30 and Parvez Asghar 4-23, and they were all out for 84. Coal Aston moved back into second place with a comfortable win over Whitley Hall 2nds at Baxter Field. James Ahmed made 52 in the hosts’ 162 all out; then Dave Rodgers (71) and skipper Ben Hall (60 not out) led their side to an eight-wicket win in 30 overs. Warmsworth closed the gap to third-placed Darfield, who had a week off, by beating Conisbrough at Common Lane. Zeeshan Karamat took 4-63 to help bowl the hosts out for 167; but Dominic McGough took 4-18 when Conisbrough replied, and they were all out for 96. Renaldo Brathwaite made 51 in Houghton Main’s 200 all out at home to Barnsley Woolley Miners 2nds, for whom Ishaq Shenwari took 4-43. The visitors were 102-6 in reply, but an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 99 between Lucas Slatter (79 not out) and Lewis Bray (51 not out) sealed a four-wicket win. Connor Snelgrove (5-59) and Charlie Harrison (4-33) bowled Monk Bretton out for 145 at the Castle Ground, but Wickersley Old Village 2nds were dismissed for 118 in reply, Dominic Fell taking 4-12. 

Lewis Binns made a crucial 74 for Division 2 leaders Frickley Colliery against struggling Thorpe Hesley & High Green at Smithywood Road, but after he had taken them to 146-2, Aditya Singh took 6-35 and they were all out for 181. Kieran McIntyre then claimed 9-34 and the hosts were bowled out for 122 in reply. Second-placed Cawthorne 2nds bowled Sheffield United out for 153 at Dark Lane, before Brennan Wilson (57) led the way to Cawthorne’s six-wicket win that leaves United relegated to Division 3. Hallam 2nds lost ground on the top two when they were well-beaten at Parkhead. Adil Nasim (45) top-scored in the hosts’ 221-8; then Harry Pollard took 5-21 to help bowl Hallam out for 90 in reply. Wakefield Thornes 2nds also missed the opportunity to keep the pressure on at the top, after Elsecar 2nds bowled them out for 135 at the Al-Murad Stadium; David Laister took 5-45 for the hosts, whilst Jack Machin made 56 at the top of the order for Thornes. Opener Kieran Higgins got the visitors off to a decent start in reply, but Safiullah Abrar (4-43) and Jamie Howarth (5-40) got to work, and Elsecar were only able to edge home by one wicket. Norton Woodseats bowled Oughtibridge War Memorial 2nds out for 148 at Waterside Gardens; then James Eyre (55) helped the visitors to a four-wicket win in 36 overs. Kieren O’Sullivan made 122 for Millhouses Works in their 242 all out at home to Aston Hall 2nds, for whom Daniel Bothma took 6-49. Stan Ashton and Jamie Taylor then put on 104 for the visitors’ first wicket, before Ali Ahmed (65) guided them to the brink of their five-wicket win. 

There was a surprise defeat for Division 3 leaders Norton Oakes at the Sands. They restricted third-bottom Bradfield Village Fellowship to 127-9, Joshua Cross taking 5-18, whilst James Shepherd made an important 42. Mark Williams took 4-17 when Oakes replied; they never recovered from losing their first four wickets with only 13 on the board, and were all out for 58. Second-placed Hatfield Town have closed the gap to the leaders to four points with a narrow win away to Higham. Wickets were shared when the visitors were bowled out for 173; then Aiden Coulbeck took 4-45 when Higham were all out for 170 in reply, despite 51 from home skipper Glen Burden. Ben Fielding took 7-46 for Sheffield Collegiate 3rds, in third place, when they bowled Frecheville Community out for 179 at the Hobson Bowl. Twenties and thirties down the order then took Collegiate past their target with three wickets remaining. Naeem Bashir (104 not out) skipper Muhammad Naseem (50) and Akhtarzaman Khan (68) helped fourth-placed Shiregreen 2nds’ to 295-7 at home to Sheffield Caribbean; then Andrew Jackson made 61 in Caribbean’s reply, but he lacked support, and they finished on 202-9. Ben Shore took 6-33 for Rockingham Colliery 2nds when they bowled bottom side Treeton 2nds out for 113 at Washfield Lane; then William King and James Armitage got the visitors off to a good start in reply, with an opening stand of 81, and they duly completed an eight-wicket win. On Sunday, Shiregreen 2nds made it a very successful weekend when Akhtarzaman Khan took 5-16 to help them bowl Worsbrough Bridge out for 74 at Hatfield House Lane, and they then reached their target in the 30th over with seven wickets in hand. 

In Division 4, leaders Sprotbrough 2nds celebrated promotion to Division 3 with a comfortable win over Thorncliffe & Wentworth at Melton Road. Louis Richardson made 64 in the hosts 218-8; then Nick Graves took 4-29 when the visitors were bowled out for 111 in reply. Kexborough took another step towards promotion with a convincing win over Upper Haugh 2nds at Bence Lane. Sutheran Nadesapillai took 4-26 to help bowl the visitors out for 121; then Joseph Bullock was unbeaten on 42 when Kexborough passed their target for the loss of three wickets in the 28th over. Daniel Hemingway made 59 in Coal Aston 2nds’ 216-6 at home to Sheffield University Staff; then Lawrence Pickford took 5-47 to help bowl the hosts to a 102-run win, and they are level with Kexborough in second. Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds lost ground on the leading group when they lost narrowly to Stocksbridge at Bracken Moor. Liam Margison (69) and William Crowcroft (52) put on 108 for the third wicket in the visitors’ 181 all out; then Alex Gough took 4-31 to help reduce Stocksbridge to 157-9, but was unable to prevent Chris Lowe and Andrew Hibbert from adding a further 28 to see their side home by one wicket. Bottom side Sheffield Collegiate 4ths won their relegation battle with Barnby Dun at Abbeydale. The visitors made 167-8; then an unbeaten 100 from Aarav Singh took Collegiate to a seven-wicket win with ten overs to spare. Doncaster Town 3rds bowled Wombwell Main out for 89 at the I-Source Stadium; and then knocked off the required runs for the loss of one wicket. 

Division 5 leaders Ackworth 2nds were beaten by Hatfield Town 2nds at Carr Side Lane, after Niall Charles took 5-24 to help bowl the hosts out for 118; then Adil Sikander (5-28) and Shehzad Hussain (5-44) bowled Ackworth out for 76 in reply. Whiston Forge narrowed the gap at the top to two points with a close-run win over Conisbrough 2nds at Park Road. Toby Humphries made 62 in the hosts’ 194 all out, Josh Cooke taking 4-44; then Omar Waine (77 not out) helped Forge to a two-wicket win, despite Tom Humphries taking 4-51. Hallam 3rds remain in fourth place after the narrowest of victories over Silkstone United at Sandygate. Chris Barraclough took 5-17 when the hosts were bowled out for 99, but Terence Balmer then returned 9.4-2-17-9 as Silkstone were bowled out for 98 in reply, Daniel Walker making 55 of those. Jacob Meehan took 5-25 to help Fishlake bowl Warmsworth 2nds out for 116, then Josh Wolsey took 6-9 when Fishlake replied, but he was unable to stop the hosts from winning by one wicket. Jack Gillespie (5-14) helped Penistone 2nds bowl Whiston Parish Church 2nds out for 138 at Queen Street, and the hosts then completed a six-wicket win in the 40th over. 

Amrithesh Uppumtharamel took 4-9 to help Division 6 leaders Waverley bowl Scholes & Harley out for 44, and they duly completed a seven-wicket win in the eighth over. Third-placed Millhouses Works 2nds had a similarly straightforward win over Wickersley Old Village 3rds at Brookhouse, bowling the hosts out for 52 and then completing a seven-wicket win in 13 overs. Green Moor, in fourth place, put Wadworth in to bat at Hill Top, bowled them out for 152, then completed a seven-wicket win in 20 overs. Handsworth Junior SC were put in to bat by Mexborough Athletic, and Omer Arshad made 55 out of their 185 all out, Lee Jeffries taking 4-36. In reply, Athletic were 134-9, Hamza Hussain taking 4-37. In the relegation battle at School Lane, opener Campbell Wroe made 61 for bottom club Darfield 2nds in their 182 all out against Whitley Hall 3rds, and the visitors were all out for 116 in reply. 

Safiullah Stanikzai took 5-48 for Division 7 leaders Sheffield United 2nds when they bowled Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds out for 130 at Bawtry Road. Brisk forties from Shaheen Momand and Motiullah Stanikzai then took the hosts to a five-wicket win in the 16th over. Second-placed Adwick-le-Street put Handsworth Junior SC 2nds in to bat at Adwick Park and bowled them out for 144, Teddy Lovejoy taking 5-41. The hosts were then made to struggle in reply, Aayan Malik taking 4-26, but they squeezed past their target by two wickets with two overs to spare. At Stainborough, there was a big win for Rockingham Colliery 3rds, in third place, when Adam Cummins (53) top-scored in their 174-8 against Stocksbridge 2nds. Finlay Siddall took 4-28 for the visitors, who were then bowled out for 48 in reply, with five bowlers sharing the wickets. Barnsley Woolley Miners 4ths were bowled out for 83 by Brookhouse at Woolley; skipper Steven Dixon then taking 4-19 when the visitors replied, but he was unable to prevent them winning by five wickets. Doncaster Town 4ths were 34-5 against Upper Haugh 3rds at Blaxton when opener Mark Lockwood (53) and Maxwell Davidson (114 not out off 100 balls) added 140 for the sixth wicket, and they posted 203-6. Craig Loftus made 51 when the visitors replied, but they finished seven runs short on 196-7. Rohan Ardley (106) and Nazam Mohammed (120 not out off 89 balls) added 190 for the second wicket for Parkhead 2nds against Higham 2nds in their 308-3; Anthony White made 63 in Higham’s reply, but they were all out for 152. 

Division 8 leaders Wombwell Main 2nds fell to defeat away to Eden Grove Parklands, for whom opener Shacheesh Sinha made 73 out of their 184 all out, and Darren Newton took 4-48 for the visitors. Elliot Mann made 50 at the top of the order for Wombwell, but Tony Singh took 5-16, and they were all out for 160 in reply. Houghton Main 2nds failed to take advantage of the leaders’ defeat, being well-beaten by Sprotbrough 2nds at Bullcroft. Scott Sykes made 78 for the hosts, Shokoor Ahmadzai taking 5-44; then Dan Clarke took 4-30 when Houghton were bowled out for 78 in reply. Norton Oakes 2nds took full advantage of the defeats for the two teams above them, and their six-wicket win over Kexborough 2nds at Oakes Park means that they now lead the table by four points. Tom Bassindale took 4-30 when the visitors were bowled out for 138, and Seth Warrington’s unbeaten 41 led his side to a comfortable win. Promotion contenders Norton Woodseats 2nds and Hallam 4ths met at Matthews Lane, where Freddie Scott’s unbeaten 56 off 41 balls took the visitors to 174-6; then Thomas Siddall took 4-25 when Woodseats were all out for 157 in reply. Skipper Hummad Younis’ 56 helped Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds to 171-9 at home to Monk Bretton 2nds, for whom Jake Richardson took 4-28. Scott Latimer’s 59 was not enough to get the visitors over the line in reply, and they were restricted to 159-8. Relegation-threatened Dearne got a much-needed 12 points with a comprehensive win over relegated Barnby Dun 2nds at Glass Park. Devan Gibson (78) led the way to the visitors 268-7, whilst Jake Harris took 4-34 for the hosts; then Barnby were all out for 130 in reply, only Rohail Habib offering real resistance with an unbeaten 56. 

In Division 9, second-placed Waverley 2nds bowled Oughtibridge War Memorial 3rds out for 161, opener John Grayson top-scoring with 61; then Akhil Babu made 76 in Waverley’s eight-wicket win. Third in the table Worsbrough Bridge 2nds made 165-9 away to Whiston Forge 2nds, then Leon Kemp took 6-21 when Forge were all out for 81 in reply. Openers Alfie Gibson (50) and Alfie Rowbottom (54) gave Elsecar 3rds a fine start in their 185 all out away to Scholes & Harley 2nds, whilst Matthew Holmes took 5-23 for the hosts. Molly Whitaker and Alex Mottram both took three early wickets when Scholes replied, and they were all out for 75. Mat Dexter’s 77 was the highlight of Frecheville Community 2nds’ 210-9 against Mexborough Athletic 2nds, for whom Mathew Russell took 4-36. Abigail Thorley took 4-12 when Athletic replied, and they were all out for 111. Lucas Quilter made 64 for Silkstone United 2nds in their 110 at home to Eden Grove Parklands 2nds, for whom Jamie Bunn took 4-35 and Santhosh Nagarajan 4-16. The visitors then completed an eight-wicket win in the 24th over. Leaders Frickley Colliery 2nds conceded against Fishlake 2nds, and Sheffield University Staff 2nds conceded to Wath 3rds

Sunday cup-ties 

Our congratulations go to Green Moor on their Billy Oates Memorial Cup final win over Waverley. Having elected to bat first, Waverley were all out for 109, having been 61-2, and then Green Moor appeared to be cruising at 99-4, but four wickets then fell for nine runs and they had just two wickets left when they passed their target in the 26th over. Curtis Coles (29 & 2-24), and Satinderpal Singh (28 & 2-7) were the match-winners for their side. 

Out thanks go to all at Green Moor CC for doing an excellent job of hosting the game. 

Congratulations go too to Doncaster Town on their five-wicket win over twice previous winners Woodhouse Grange in the semi-final of the K3 Dental Cup at Town Fields. Chris Bilton’s 101 was the backbone of the visitors’ 220-7. In reply, Jayden Fell (52) and Bhargav Merai (54) helped Town reach 113-1, then Charlie Kaye, with 44 off 27 balls, brought them within sight of their target. Doncaster will play the winners of next Sunday’s semi-final, between York and Wakefield Thornes, at Castleford CC on Sunday 31 August. 

We also congratulate Sheffield Collegiate 2nds and Treeton on reaching the final of the Whitworth Cup, to be played at Aston Hall on Sunday 7 September. Tate Miller (4-29) and Daniel Longley (3-51) helped Collegiate bowl Ackworth out for 173 at Abbeydale; then Jack Clough (79) and Greg Mann (45 not out) put on 138 for the third wicket to earn the hosts a seven-wicket win in the 32nd over. Ben Birtles took 3-38 and Matt Lambert 4-15 when Treeton bowled Elsecar out for 187 at Washfield Lane, Arsalan Mir (45) and Tanzeel Ali (50) adding 90 for the visitors’ third wicket. Will Scott (59) then top-scored for Treeton in their five-wicket win.
